Great American Ranch Horse Competition

Flat Hat Farm Ranch Horse Competition

The Ranch Horse competition will be held in the main coliseum at 3:00 pm on Friday.
Horses will compete in the order they are listed in the catalog.

This will be a competition to showcase the using and working skills of the ranch horse. Whether riding on the ranch or competing in the show ring, a good ranch horse needs to have a good handle and athletic ability. The course will give the riders the opportunity to demonstrate these fine tuned skills.

Riders will begin the competition with their dry work. They will enter the arena by opening a gate and proceeding to work a pattern that will include transitions of gaits and speed. The pattern will include a lead change, stop, back up and a spin in both directions. Logs and a bridge may also be included.

After the dry work, a cow will be released into the arena. The rider will demonstrate their cow work by holding or boxing a cow at the end of the arena for a designated time of 50 seconds. When the whistle blows, they will then drive the cow down the arena and demonstrate the horses’ roping skills. It is not mandatory that the cow be roped, but it is important to show that the horse has the ability and temperament to give the rider every opportunity to rope the cow.

Ranch Horse Competition awards will be presented after the Trail Horse Competition awards are given out on Saturday morning.
